In Cherokee mythology we regard Thunderbird as a powerful spirit in bird form. He is symbolic of power, strength and protection. 

He is the creator of storms. Lightening flashes from his beak and with a flap of his large wings the thunder claps and rolls through the cloudy skies. Thunderbird resides in the West, of the Four Directions.
